Technologies for preventive conservation in museums: reflections on the design of an educational experience

The way in which digital tools and new technologies were integrated into everyday life and workflows across all professional sectors has also begun to influence the way the Italian museum sector operates. This revolution involves not only museums specialising in contemporary art, but also museums with historical collections that are nevertheless seeking a contemporary approach to their conservation and presentation. The Pinacoteca Nazionale of Siena, a public museum conserving and exhibiting primarily masterpieces from the fifteenth century, provides an opportunity to investigate the challenges associated with the reorganisation of part of its collection. This process has prompted a critical and systematic approach to the digital documentation of the artworks that have been moved and rearranged. This topic provided the basis for an educational programme delivered through a Summer School organised by the School of Conservation and Restoration in Urbino. The programme provided an opportunity to develop and test streamlined methodologies for the digital documentation of artworks from a conservation perspective.
