Digital nomadism and clothing practices for travelling subjectivities

1628

In recent years, the phenomenon of digital nomadism has taken on connotations that frame alternative ways of life, closely linked to a productive sphere that extends the geographies of action of the individuals involved.
The ability to make the most of communication technologies has encouraged remote working, freeing people from the time and space of their usual social relationships, bounded by their homes, towns and places where they intend to live, even temporarily. Constant travel and the ease of reaching distant destinations quickly, reflect lifestyles that question the very concept of living, while at the same time imposing the temporary transfer of a few indispensable belongings and conditioning the choice of clothing.
The “dwelling” garment replaces cumbersome luggage, and the same garment can be transformed into the unimaginable to fulfil the functions of unprecedented wearability offered by the skilful mastery of fashion designers capable of conceiving sartorial models by experimenting with the geometric variations of patternmaking. The research focuses on ways of designing and prototyping garments and accessories for cosmopolitan nomads, interweaving different cultural traditions with upcycling techniques that challenge contemporary fashion design practices.
