I have always observed that divergence within the skyline of the UID community with a mixture of unease and curiosity. Massimiliano always stood out, dressed mostly in black, often with elegant cloaks, and smoking, always. We met because we both belonged to the courtyard smokers’ group, those who spend much of a conference socializing rather than listening to colleagues’ talks, turning the outdoor space into a sort of literary salon.
